Travelling to Mexico without leaving Madrid and getting to know the tradition of the Day of the Dead is one of the best proposals from Be my Driver. A day to celebrate and get to know a city that does it all.

The Day of the Dead is one of the oldest known Mexican traditions that has survived to the present day. It was declared Intangible World Heritage by UNESCO in 2003, considered as "one of the most relevant of the living heritage of Mexico and the world and one of the oldest and strongest cultural expressions of the country's indigenous groups".

For all these reasons, and thanks to the colourfulness and sensitivity of this festival, we can enjoy it for another year and celebrate it in style in Madrid. Even dethroning the already adopted American Halloween and yielding prominence to the proximity and soul of the Mexican Day of the Dead.

Throughout the month and most of the following month, we can enjoy spectacular altars in which the four elements are represented. Fire by the candles that are lit around the images of loved ones, water which is usually seen in offerings in bowls or glasses filled with this liquid, earth represented this time in the form of food and wind which, given the difficulty of representing it, we opted for the visual way of having it present by putting it on the hanging papel picado (chopped paper). Thus, on each altar of the Day of the Dead there are garlands of coloured paper swaying in the wind.

This year, as usual, at the Casa de México in Madrid (Calle de Alberto Aguilera, 20) the biggest and most beautiful Day of the Dead altar has been set up. At the entrance to the palace where it is located we can enjoy a colourful spectacle from the steps. Arranged on the steps leading up to the entrance are almost 6,000 papel picado flowers. The little skulls and the colour make the tradition that symbolises the meeting between the living and their deceased loved ones a joyful reunion and displaces the sadness of All Saints' Day that we traditionally celebrate here.

This year in Torrejón de Ardoz a free exhibition of 17 giant skulls spread throughout the park, a bancatrina, a bench with a couple of catrinas and two hanging heads, created by renowned and emerging artists inspired by the Day of the Dead, have been exhibited in the Europa Park.
